You don't wana miss out on thiss!!) I've decided not to bore you further with talking about it's infinite benefits ( networking, advice from experts, social media reviews, competition for $400 CASH-in -your-hand on Sat. April 10!) and have decided to touch on a new topic that is or will be affecting us all at one time in the close approaching future.

Interviews.
We dread them. We want them. We need them and they make us want to curl up and hide in a corner just thinking about them.

The gateway to all opportunities is undoubtedly an interview of some kind. How you approcah this gateway could mean the difference between getting or not getting the job of your dreams. There are a few things I learned just this year though that I think have made me a more experienced interviewee and as a fellow soon-to-be post-grad, young, PR professional I thought it might be helpful if I shared a few.

1. First off, it's essential that you be prepared.
I've been told by one of my dearest friends that I am the most prepared person she knows. It's a quality that has helped me a lot when it comes to interviewing and that everyone should decide now to adopt. Preparation is NOT just googling the company, although, that's an important part of it. Preparation means knowing all you can about the company. When did it begin? Where are it's offices? What type of clients do they work with? If you know who the interviewer (s) will be beforehand, google them too! Look at their facebooks and blogs. Get insider info on them. You may not use it, but you might find you have something in common that could be helpful when making a personal connection during your talk. Being prepared also means rehearsing. I have been known to do this before any kind of professional conversation with someone who could help me get a job. Ask a friend to quiz you on potential interview questions. It helps if the person is also in PR or in your same industry so they can ask the right types of questions. I have found that actually saying the words, hearing them, and having an idea how they will sound during the real thing, helps me stay organized. If you're doing a phone interview, you have a huge advantage. Always have notes in front of you to use as a guide (this helps you stay focused and have less rambled answers) and smile the entire time. They can tell. Trust me.

2. I was surprised that some people did not know this, but at the end of an interview, when the person says, "Well______, it was great talking/meeting you. Do you have any questions for me?" The correct response is NOT to say hurriedly, no, thanks, nice to meet you and bye. The correct response is to actually ask questions. I found some good ones on this blog: http://itsaprthang.wordpress.com/. Ask things that will give you a window to reiterate good things about yourself. Like, "what is the most important quality you're looking for in the ideal candidate for this positions?" "What could I expect on my first day if I was selected for this position?" "Can you describe the office culture at X Company?" Also before ending an interview either on the phone or in person, it's not a bad idea to reinforce or quickly recap why you think they should pick you. If they tell you the most important quality they are looking for in the candidate, assure he or she that you have that quality, that you would love to become a part of their team and feel that you have skills that would benefit X company immensely.

3. The final tidbit I have to offer is about what to do after the interview. Most interviewers will say, "feel free to follow-up." But, what exactly does that mean? It is sometimes difficult to determine if you're being pushy or naggy by calling to see if they have made the decision or by emailing them once a day. Here is how I typically follow-up after an interview and I invite you to copy my strategy (I've gotten positive results with it):

When you leave the interview, already have in your car, an addressed and stamped thank you note envelope. Take a few breaths and write out a note thanking them for interviewing you and relating something they said in your meeting. Then, find a post box near the company and mail it so it will get there in a couple of days. It is also professional to type a note on letterhead that matches your resume. Send it the day of or the day after the interview though, no later. If it gets there 2 weeks after the interview, the point is lost.

Three business days after the interview send a follow-up email. This email can say similar things to what you said in your note. Thank them for their time, let them know you hope they are keeping your application in mind, maybe ask a question you forgot to ask in the interview (nothing that has to do with salary, paid time off or holidays though. Save those questions for when they offer you the job!) You want them to know you are still thinking about them.

A few days after the interview, find your interviewer on Linkedin (you will have already done this in the preparation stage). If they have one, add them.

Also, start following them on twitter. You can even tweet and mention them, and that you enjoyed meeting them ( this can be done the day of the interview as well.)

Call the person who helped you get the interview and tell them how great it went ( the day of or after the interview).

Send a thank you email to anyone at the company who helped you set up the interview. Did a specific HR person have to call or email you a few times to set up the appointment? Thank them for being kind and helpful. Every bit helps!

So there you have it!
Those are about all the tips I have today for how to ace an interview--except of course, for attending our Regional Activity April 9-10. It will help you learn all about how you can highlight social media expertise in your interview and on your resume, in addition to SO much more! Hope that everyone is planning to attend. See you there!

Sincerely,

Kate Hunte
PRSSA VP of Membership

Learn from Esteemed Professionals and Walk Away with a $400 Scholarship!! For example, tweeting and blogging about the innane details of your life probably isn't going to make you stand out when your future employer googles you (yea, they DO do that you know!) and tries to get the inside scoop on you. So, what WILL make you stand out? That's the big question. Here are some things you can do to make sure your social media makes you stand out for the RIGHT reasons:

1.Google yourself!

Future employers, hiring boards, folks who wanna date you (ok --that last one may not be relevant to the job hunt, but important all the same) are going to do it anyways, so why not make sure that the things they are going to find are positive? If you use social media: blogs, twitter, facebook, myspace, everything you say and every photo you post is fair game for the world to view! (think about that one for a minute) So when you post things, be concious that they make you sound, and look intelligent, as well as someone with a good moral character. Not saying that you aren't human (we all are) but the whole world doesn't need to know all your dirty laundry! Keep that in your closet where it belongs (or in my case, on the floor of my room :/)!

What counts as positive social media uses? that brings me to number 2:

2. Create a Web Site or online portfolio

This might sound like a difficult thing to do. I know what you're thinking, "Kate, making a Web Site requires skills, software, money and time that I simply don't have!" But that's where you're wrong, because making a Web Site really is easy and many times, 100 % FREE! www. weebly.com and www.myvisualcv.com are the sites that I use because they are really simple to upload documents ( JPEGs and PDF's) of your work samples. They come with ready-made templates that look professional too. The best way to find the right medium for you is to get out there and look at what other people are using. Need a great way to find professionals? That brings me to mumber 3:

(*warning #2 is a good tip but a word of caution: as I said anything you post online is fair game. Don't post professional research or writing you think people may want to steal and pass off as there own without copyrighting it first. An easy way to copyright work, seal it in an envelope and mail it to yourself! Then no one can claim they did it first.)

3. Get on Linkedin!

If you aren't already on linkedin, you are seriuosly missing out on a jackpot of resources that you should be utilizing. A recent statistic in PR tactics said that the median age for linkedin users is somewhere around the late 40's. What does this mean? That experienced professionals, not just fresh off the block graduates, are using it! These are CEO's, company founders and other established practitioners who have a wealth of knowledge to share. You probably think you don't know anyone on linkedin, but trust me, you know more people than you think (if you want, add me to your network: www.linkedin/in/katehunte)!

4. Tweet and blog about stuff that matters!

I referenced this topic earlier but it really is one of the most important. When you have a blog or when you tweet, you should try (whenver possible) to talk about things that acutally matter (to people who aren't you and your mom). For example, talk about issues that are important to you, your take on current events, what your working on at your job or in your classes. These topics will lead to conversations with other intelligent, business minded people. Those connections may lead to making that contact who will land you your first good job. Speaking of networking, number 5, coming up, is probably my number one piece of advice (drum roll please...):

5. Attend the USM PRSSA Regional Activity April 9-10 PeRsonal to PRofessional: Navigating Social Media!!!

The USM RA, http://www.usm.edu/prssa/,is going to be a phenomenal opportunity for students and professionals alike to learn from industry experts how they can use social media to work for them. The 2 day event will include a social media review, where you can print out a months worth of tweets or blogs and have professionals tell you what's good and bad about them. You'll also get the chance to network with professionals, students and speakers--a Very important plus that could help give you an edge when you really need it!

This brings me to the end of my sermon :) Hope you found it helpful and interesting! That's it for now.

Yours truly,

Kate Hunte

PRSSA VP of Membership/Recruitment

Two High PRofile Speakers Confirmed for our Regional Activity

Hello All!

PRSSA at USM is thrilled to announce that two highly esteemed and experienced PR professionals have agreed to speak at our Regional Activity, April 9-10!!

The first is the President of idgroup, an innovative consulting firm specializing in branding, organization development, communication and design,
Dr. Mona Amodeo Ph.D.

two Monaisms:

"1. the best answers are not always found behind the biggest desk. 2. the answers are in the room. Enjoy!!

USM PRSSA promotes go green project
By Kevin Wheeler
HATTIESBURG, MS (WDAM) - The Public Relations Student Society of America has teamed up with Cotton, Inc. to promote a project called "Cotton: From Blue to Green."
Several drop off points have been set up around campus and parts of the city. The goal is to get at least 500 pairs of blue jeans donated. The jeans are recycled and turned into a natural cotton fiber insulation.
Southern Miss PRSSA president Scott Thornburg said there has been a great response to the project so far.
"I think most of the students when they find out what we are doing, they really like the idea, they want to help, you know they want to help other people and if it means donating a pair of their old blue jeans they are glad to do it."
The PRSAA has several drop off locations around the hub city. Everyone can help by doing the following:

1. Announce the Cotton Campaign in you classes and invite your professors and classmates to donate. There are thousands of students at USM. We only need 2oo of them to bring in one pair of jeans. Not so hard :)

2. Volunteer to help work the last 3 Cotton Campaign booths: Fridays 23th and 30th from 5-9 in at Live @ 5, and Wed. 28 from 10-2

3. Ask your parents, co-workers and roommates to donate.

4. Ask your Resident Assistant to let you collect denim from those in your residence hall.

5. Bring in denim yourself! Go home this weekend and clean out your closet bring all those tacky jeans you'd never wear now.

PRSSA appreciates all your hard work. First things first, USM PRSSA has a new executive board that was elected in May of 2009. The board members are: Scott Thornburg, PRSSA President; Drew Treuting, Agency Director; Samantha McCain, Co-Agency Director; Grayson Baird, Agency Associate Director; Samantha Yeager, VP of Publicity (Electronic); Amber Ross, VP of Events; and Kate Hunte, VP of Membership/Treasurer. We are all eager to get the ball rolling on the great things that USM PRSSA has in store for its members and potential members this semester.

On that same note, we are planning a USM PRSSA social for the beginning of the school semester. The specifics (date, time and place) aren't nailed down quite yet; however, stay tuned for more info! The social will be a great opportunity for members and students considering membership to meet in an informal and fun setting to learn the benefits of becoming a member and see what PRSSA is all about.

Lastly, I would like to wish our president, Scott Thornburg, the best of luck as he travels to Scottsdale, AZ for a PRSSA Leadership Conference this weekend! Have fun and make our chapter proud :)

Best,
Samantha Yeager

Last meeting of the semester!

Tonight is the last meeting of the semester. All meetings are at 5:00 p.m. in Southern Hall 115: Tuesday, February 12, Tuesday, March 4, Tuesday, March 25, and Tuesday, April 15.

2) We talked about National Assembly and made important decisons regarding that. Those details are in a separate e-mail.

3) We are planning an agency tour hopefully on March 28 to the coast. Possible locations include the Mississippi Sea Wolves.

4) I just e-mailed Dr. Saunders to see if she can speak to us at some point this semester. She is a former PRSSA advisor.

5) Are you interested in being an officer next year? Elections aren't until March but if you think you might be interested, go to the current officer and talk to them about their position. Talk to a few different officers and find out what their duties are. See what you might be interested in. Current officers are:
Candace Mitchell - President ca_mitch@bellsouth.net
Ashley Dyle - Vice-President ashley.dyle@usm.edu
Darlene Adams - Treasurer bndadams@bellsouth.net
Toni White - Secretary antonia.white@usm.edu
Jessica Heider - Events Coordinator dottrj420@aol.com
Amber Peterson - Publicity amber.peterson@usm.edu

6) We're looking into a conference in Atlanta but we've got to get the dates...Stay tuned!

7) If your dues expire this Spring and you'd like to renew for next year, you must pay your dues by FEBRUARY 12. Please make checks payable to PRSSA.

Meeting Minutes from Thursday, July 19, 2007

Hi Everyone!

Thanks again to everyone who attended the meeting yesterday. I feel like we got a lot accomplished. For those who were not able to attend, here's a recap of what we discussed:

1) Fundraisers: We're currently waiting for Toni to receive more information from Eagle Dining about selling concessions at the football games. This seems like a good fundraiser. However, we have a few concerns:

*Must we commit to ALL of the games or can we just do 2?
*What is the average commission that organizations make, in terms of dollars?

2) Meetings: We decided to have our general meetings for everyone once a month, rather than twice a month during lunch. We feel that we can have more worthwhile and productive meetings if we have a once-a-month, lengthy meeting. At these meetings, we will have a speaker come in for about 15-20 minutes at the beginning and speak to us about things. Darlene had a great idea of getting someone from a clothing boutique to come in and talk about how to "dress for success." These are topics that will draw all majors to our meetings and not just public relations. Our first meeting will be held Tuesday, August 28 at 5:30. Kurt is working on getting a location in Southern Hall. Amber will handle the flyers and is going to update our bulletin board. Meeting schedule for the rest of the semester is as follows:

September 18 at 5:30
October 9 at 5:30
October 30 at 5:30
November 13 at 5:30 (Note that we originally said 11/20, but this is the Tuesday before Thanksgiving.)

We will call executive (officer) meetings as needed and try to communicate through e-mail.

3) Ashley Dyle has created a website for PRSSA. The link is http://prssausm.blogspot.com/ <http://prssausm.blogspot.com/> . She will be repsponsible for maintaining and updating it. If anyone has information for Ashley to put on the website, please e-mail it to her at ashleydyle@gmail.com. Information we would like to put on the website pertains to: meeting minutes, job openings, internships, conference information, etc. We would like to link to this from the MCJ website. Ashley will contact Dr. Campbell about this matter.

4) We will be speaking in the MCJ classes the first week of school about PRSSA and inviting everyone to the first meeting where we will have food. If you have an MCJ class, please take that opportunity to ask your teacher for a few moments to speak about why everyone should come to the meeting, the value of PRSSA, and let them know about the meeting. Darlene is going to create us a new application. I will e-mail the blank application to everyone. Please print out some copies of it to hand to people if they ask for an application. Several people have already asked me.

5) Dues are set at $60 or $65 for this year - depending on the responses I get from the other e-mail.

6) We are going to try and get some buttons (pins) made to wear during the first week of school before our first meeting that say "Ask me about PRSSA!" I found a website where we can get 10 2-color 2-1/4 inch buttons for $12.00, but we are going to try and get them made locally first, possibly on campus. Note, this needs to be checked into right away because we need to get them before school starts. I believe Kurt was going to check on this because he knew of some printing places.

7) Amber is checking into getting us a grant from the SGA. They were offering grant money to campus organizations.

8) We still want to attend a PRAM meeting so that is something to keep in mind for this semester. Kurt mentioned an event PRAM is having in Mobile that we might possibly attend. Another thing we mentioned when attending these conferences is possibly renting a USM van (or 2) so that we might all ride together. More details about the PRAM conference in the future.

9) We would really like to get PRSSA in the news. So when we have an event or something, we want to have a member write a news release about it and send it to the Student Printz. I have to go and see Maggie Williams next week and I am going to talk to her about possibly a trade-off where we write them articles (for free) and they give us ad space for meetings, etc.

10) PRSSA is going to help plan 2 events this semester. The first is October 12, a photojournalism sysmposium at lunch and evening Hall of Fame induction. The second is November 9, a daytime sysmposium on the civil rights era journalism and an evening Hall of Fame induction.

If you haven’t already joined the USM Chapter of PRSSA group on facebook, please do so! We’ll be using that as a communication tool along with e-mail this year. Note that we will send e-mails through facebook as well as e-mail to ensure that somehow, you receive the message, since not everyone checks their email often, and not everyone has facebook.

I think that’s all. If I forgot anything, someone please let me know. Thanks again for all your hard work! If you need anything, please don’t hesitate to call me. I’m looking forward to a great semester (and year!).

Candace
Phone: 601-569-2104

2007 - 2008 Summer Social for PRSSA at USM

Would anyone be interested in getting together for a summer social?
